Former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee Launched India’s First Nationwide HigherEd Rating System

Former President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee launched QS I∙GAUGE, a nationwide higher education rating system by UK based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) at an event at The Imperial Hotel, Janpath, New Delhi on 21st March 2018.

The launch was graced by Dr. Virander S. Chauhan, Chairman, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC); Mr Ben Sowter, Director, QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd, UK; Mr Ashwin Fernandes, CEO, QS-ERA India Pvt Ltd; and Mr. S V Ranganath, IAS (Retd), Chairman, QS I∙GAUGE  International Advisory Board.

On this occasion Shri Pranab Mukherjee remarked that, Quality is a primary parameter of education and rating constitute an effective tool of institutional assessment and introspection to aspire big. Quality of Education, especially higher education has been the hallmark of our culture since the establishment of the oldest universities or ‘centers of learning’ at Nalanda and Taxila. However, we have derailed in sustaining our ancient imprint to the 21st Century. The former President of India and the harbinger of quality in higher education, congratulated the team associated with QS I∙GAUGE for a timely intervention in the Indian higher education sector.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Ashwin Fernandes, CEO, QS-ERA India Pvt Ltd said, “We at QS are excited about this progressive project. QS I∙GAUGE is a system, which is designed in India, considering international parameters and still localising the system to capture the diverse Indian higher education system. I am confident that this will give a much-needed boost to Indian colleges and universities, on an international footing”.

Mr Ben Sowter, Director QS Ltd, UK introduced the concept of QS I∙GAUGE, a brand incorporated in India , a joint venture initiative of QS and the ERA Foundation, Bengaluru. QS I∙GAUGE is unique considering this is the first rating tool for colleges in India. The methodology of the QS I∙GAUGE has been careful planned, deliberated and contextualised to India and the aspirations of the institutions for the 21st century and beyond. On the launch of QS I∙GAUGE he said, the system comprises seven primary indicators and five secondary indicators, ranging from Teaching and Learning, Employability, Social Responsibility to Research and Innovation. The QS I∙GAUGE rating provides a unique 360-degree perspective of Indian Institutions for higher learning.

Hon’ble Pranab Mukherjee and NAAC Chairman, Dr Virander S. Chauhan presented certificates to the institutions selected for the pilot rating. QS I∙GAUGE Diamond University Rating was presented to Banasthali Vidyapith, Vellore Institute of Technology and O.P. Jindal Global University; while a Gold University Rating was presented to M S Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences and Manav Rachna University; and Silver University Rating to Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research. In the college category, Gold Rating was presented to Gurunanak Institute of Technology and Symbiosis Institute of Business Management; and a Silver Rating to MIT College of Engineering.

QS I∙GAUGE ratings have been modelled after the QS Stars international rating but adapted to capture the reality of the dynamic Indian higher education sector, while at the same time maintaining the strict quality standards that are equal with the QS brand.
