UGC to release draft guidelines, a curriculum framework for environmental education at the undergraduate level

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) lately released the draft guidelines and curriculum framework for environmental education at the undergraduate level highlighting that out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), six are directly linked to environmental protection and resource conservation.

“The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 underlines the importance of making environmental education an integral part of the curriculum and encouraging environmental awareness and sensitivity towards its conservation and sustainable development,” UGC Chairman Shri Jagadesh Kumar told.

“The present document is an outcome of the UGC’s initiative to implement the National Education Policy, 2020 which has emphasised the need to formulate guidelines and curriculum framework for environmental education. The document is expected to cater to students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and also includes topics to sensitise students about the commitment of the nation towards achieving sustainable development goals.” Kumar further added, explaining the draft guidelines.

ISRO launches satellite built by 750 girl students

Sriharikota: AzaadiSAT-2.0, part of ISRO’s SSLV D2 launch recently was designed by students across the country under the guidance of Chennai-based startup Space Kidz India. Government school students aged 14-17 worked on AzaadiSAT, which will show amateur radio communication capabilities and measure radiation. To build it, the students learnt coding and programmed sensors that can function in space. They were guided by the startup Space Kidz India, whose work includes the design and launch of small satellites.

The project conforms to the United Nations' call for "Women in space". "This is the first of its kind space mission with an all-women concept to promote women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)," Space Kidz's Chief Technology Officer Rifath Sharook said.

IIT Madras professor elected as an international member of the US National Academy of Engineering

Chennai: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) faculty Prof R I Sujith has been elected as an international member of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He was elected in recognition of his contributions to engineering ‘for applications of dynamical systems theory to the understanding and control of instabilities in engineering systems.’

Academy membership honours those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”

Prof RI Sujith is the second Indian to be elected to the Aerospace Section of the National Academy of Engineering after Dr B N Suresh, who was the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO, from 2003-07. He also become the second IIT Madras professor who is elected to the National Academy of Engineering, after Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala.

Government trying to even UG and PG medical seats in 4 years: Union Health minister

New Delhi: For all MBBS graduates to enrol in PG programmes, Hon’ble Union Health Minister Shri Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the government is trying to equalise the number of undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats within four years.

"When we open a dispensary, we also need doctors. Eight years ago, India had 51,000 MBBS seats. Today, we have 1,00,226 undergraduate seats, and postgraduate seats grew from 34,000 to 64,000," the Minister said, as per PTI.

"We have set a target to make the number of MBBS UG and PG seats equal so that all our doctors get the opportunity to enrol in PG courses and get the best healthcare education," he added.

96,000 students applied for 4,400 seats in Delhi’s School of Specialized Excellence

New Delhi: Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi Shri Arvind Kejriwal claimed that almost 96,000 applications have been received for 4,400 seats in Delhi’s School of Specialized Excellence. “There are 30 specialized schools in Delhi, in which admission will be available through the entrance examination, after passing the 8th class. In the view of the 21st century, there is a need to teach IT and artificial intelligence in government schools,” Delhi CM said.

In these Specialised Excellence Schools, education would be provided to the students of the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th standard, in which the focus will be on skilled education including medical engineering and others.
