India’s aviation industry is one of the fastest-growing air travel markets in the world. There is a huge demand for engineers who can design, test, and improve aircraft systems and strengthen the technical functioning of aviation through R&D, avionics, and maintenance solutions.

About the course

Aerospace engineering is a 4-year undergraduate engineering degree that focuses on the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of aircraft and spacecraft and related systems. Aerospace engineers ensure that aircraft fly safely and efficiently and perform at their optimal level.

The course is offered as B.E. or B.Tech. The curriculum includes fundamentals of physics and mathematics, along with thermodynamics, aerodynamics, orbital mechanics, flight mechanics, aerospace structures, compressible flow, aerospace materials, design, programming, simulation, and engineering labs.

Admissions -

Students, after class 12 with PCM as core subjects and an aggregate of 45-50%, are eligible to apply. Admissions are primarily through national-level tests such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced, or state-level tests like KCET. Some private deemed universities also accept scores from exams like Uni-GAUGE.

3-year engineering diploma holders or B.Sc graduates in PCM can get a lateral entry into the 2nd year of the course.

Fees –

Government colleges charge between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 3 lakhs per year.

Private colleges charge about Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 6 lakhs per year.

Career scope

Graduates can work in sectors such as –

· Aviation

· Defence

· Space

· Drone technology

· Research & Development

Common roles include –

· Aerospace engineer

· Aerodynamics engineer

· Structures engineer

· Aircraft design engineer

· Flight test engineer

· Quality and maintenance engineer

· Propulsion engineer

· Systems engineer

Some graduates also opt for higher education or research and specialise in advanced design, simulation, or space technologies.

The starting salary for fresh graduates is between Rs. 4.5 lakhs and Rs. 7 lakhs annually. With a few years of experience, they can earn between Rs. 8 lakhs and Rs. 15 lakhs per year, and senior professionals, especially those in R & D, defence, software, or specialised roles, can earn over Rs. 50 lakhs per year in some cases.

Conclusion

Aerospace engineering adds great value to the aviation sector by improving aircraft performance, safety, and innovation. As aviation in India and worldwide expands, aerospace engineers will be in great demand. For students who love science, technology, innovation, problem-solving, and working with machines, this is a favourable career option.
