Computer science and data science are the fundamental fields in today’s digital world. India produces a large pool of data science and computer science professionals each year. The B.Tech enrollment rate reached 16 lakhs in 2025-26, dominated by fields like AI and data science. Around 1.5 million engineers graduate annually, with the computer science stream holding the largest share, while the data science engineers are not far behind.
A Computer Science Engineering (CSE) is a broader, foundational stream, whereas a B.Tech in Data Science is a specialised, modern field.
Understanding the course details and differences
Both are 4-year undergraduate courses. Students after class 12, with a PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) background and a minimum of 45% - 50% aggregate, are eligible to apply. The entrance exams for both courses include JEE Main, COMEDK UGET, KCET, VITEEE, BITSAT, and other state-level and university-level exams.
Subjects
CSE focuses on core computing, algorithms, operating systems, software engineering principles, database management systems, computer networks, and data structures.
B.Tech in data science focuses on specialised subjects such as data visualisation, data mining, machine learning, statistical foundation, AI tools, big data, and programming.
However, the common subjects include data structures, algorithms, programming languages, and database management.
Who is it suitable for?
CSE provides a foundation in software development and system architecture. This is ideal for students interested in coding, software development, general IT, operating systems, and system architecture. This is a more versatile field that offers opportunities in almost every sector.
A B.Tech in data science is a modern field that broadens the study areas into analytics, AI, and pattern recognition. Ideal for students interested in data visualisation and mining, data analysis, AI/ML, and predictive analytics and modeling. This is a good option for those aiming at exploring business analytics, AI/ML, and business intelligence roles.
Fees
CSE - Top government institutions like IITs and NITs charge between Rs. 2 lakhs and Rs. 8 lakhs for the complete course. Private institutions charge between Rs. 10 lakhs and over Rs. 20 lakhs for the full course.
B.Tech in data science – Government colleges charge between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 2 lakhs per annum. Private institutions charge between Rs. 4 lakhs and over Rs. 17 lakhs for the full program.
Career scope
CSE
CS professionals have been in great demand for decades. There is a strong demand in industries including IT, companies, and start-ups focusing on emerging technologies, and product companies.
Entry-level salary is between Rs. 4 lakhs and Rs. 12 lakhs with a significant scope for career growth through specialisations. Top firms and professionals with experience and specialisations can earn up to Rs. 30 lakhs per annum or higher.
B.Tech in data science
Jobs in data science are booming and are expected to reach about a million by the end of 2026 and about 11 million in the next 5 years. There is an increasing demand for data science engineers in IT, banking and finance, e-commerce, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing industries. Graduates are offered roles such as data scientists, data analysts, AI/ML engineers, business intelligence analysts, etc.
The salary component is higher here, driven by a huge demand. Freshers can expect a salary between Rs. 5 lakhs and Rs. 12 lakhs per annum, and experienced professionals can earn between Rs. 15 lakhs and over Rs. 30 lakhs per annum.
Conclusion
In essence, computer science engineering offers a versatile path, whereas B.Tech in data science is a more specialised field offering opportunities in AI and analytics. Both offer great career opportunities, growth, and stability in this digital era.
Note: A B.Tech Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) with specialisation in AI/ML and Data Science is offered as a deep-dive 4-year course.
