Understanding Physiotherapy and Its Relevance

Also known as physical therapy, physiotherapy is a medical discipline that focuses on pain management/reduction, improving body mobility and functionality, facilitating recovery from illness or injury, improving body balance, and strengthening the body to improve the quality of life.

From paediatric care to women’s health, general and lifestyle disease management, neurological and cardiopulmonary care to management of sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions, and geriatric care, physiotherapy is a necessity for a wide range of medical conditions and various stages of life.

The physiotherapy sector in India is rapidly growing owing to the rising chronic conditions, ageing population, and increased participation in sports and related fields. The market is projected to reach $1.9 billion by 2030, as against $ 0.96 billion in 2022.


BPT Course Details

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) is a 4-year undergraduate course with 6 months or 1 year of mandatory internship in clinics, hospitals, with sports teams, rehabilitation centres or educational institutions.

The course focuses on human anatomy, physiology, psychology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, exercise therapy, biomechanics, kinesiology, electrotherapy, general medicine, pharmacology, general surgery, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, physical therapy, neurology, cardiopulmonary therapy, and other clinical subjects.


Eligibility, Admission, and Fees

Students after Class 12 with a Science background and Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as main subjects, and a minimum aggregate of 50% are eligible to apply. Many universities mandate that the candidates have to be at least 17 years old as required on a specific date in the admission year.

Admission is based on entrance tests such as NEET, CUET, IPU CET, KCET, and other state-level tests.

Fees: In government colleges – between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 3 lakhs per year.

In private colleges, between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 10 lakhs or more (depending on the institution).

  2. Those with an empathetic mindset, who understand the patient’s needs, complaints, and offer care beyond medication and surgery.

  4. Individuals who like to explore diverse fields such as sports, orthopaedics, neurology, and other fields.


Career Opportunities

Physiotherapists can work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports clinics, as corporate wellness specialists, at patient homes, fitness clubs, private practice, orthopaedic and neurological centres, community health centres, geriatric care facilities, education and research fields, government organisations, and NGOs.


Salary & Growth

The salary significantly depends on the employer, location, and specialisations.

Entry-level salary is between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 30,000 per month. With experience and further specialisations, salary can go up to Rs. 45,000 per month. In metropolitan cities and with private practice, salaries can be between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 80,000 per month.  

Advanced studies, such as a Master of Physiotherapy, certifications, and further research, open up newer avenues and international opportunities.
