Introduction

The Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is a sought-after course for students who are keen to pursue a holistic and integrated system of medical care.

About Ayurveda and its relevance

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system that believes in balancing the mind, body, and soul to ensure complete well-being. It emphasises the connection between the physical body, the physiological aspects of the human mind, and the spiritual harmony – all of which work together to maintain overall wellness. Today, with rising health issues due to poor diet, lifestyle challenges, and stress, Ayurveda offers deep-rooted treatments that target the root cause of the disease rather than providing only symptomatic relief, leading to long-term wellness.

A degree in BAMS is designed to combine the ancient principles of Ayurveda together with the essential elements of modern medicine to build an integrated and well-rounded healthcare system. The degree is duly recognised as an equivalent to the MBBS degree and is regulated by the AYUSH ministry.

Course structure and subjects

BAMS is a degree program spanning 5.5 years, out of which 4.5 years are dedicated to theoretical training and one year to a mandatory rotatory internship. Along with the traditional ayurvedic principles, including herbal medicines, Yoga, diet therapy, and surgical techniques, the course also covers core medical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.

The course is carefully designed to offer extensive theoretical and practical learning, build skill and dexterity, and cultivate high moral and ethical standards. The program includes integrated healthcare training through regular clinical postings, laboratory sessions, and outreach activities.

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates should have passed class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised education board, with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB), and a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.
  • Admission depends on the qualifying score in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

Admission process and fees details

Admission process to the BAMS course is similar to that of all medical courses.

  • Candidates have to register and appear for the NCERT-based NEET-UG.
  • Counselling for BAMS is conducted just like other medical courses. Students must participate in state or central counselling rounds and select their preferred college based on the NEET ranking and seat availability in the government or private institutions.
  • Course fees vary depending on the type of institution (government or private) and the category of seat obtained through counselling (General merit, management seat, etc.). Typically, for government colleges, it can range between Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 50,000 (total course fees); between Rs. 1,00,000 to Rs. 15,00,000 (total course fees) in private colleges.

Scope, career opportunities, and salary

BAMS graduates can choose from a wide range of career paths.

  1. Licensed Ayurvedic doctors can work in hospitals, clinics, Panchakarma centres, or wellness retreats.
  2. There are extensive opportunities in research and development, clinical trials, wellness management, medical tourism, and health consultancy.
  3. In the academic sector, they can teach at Ayurvedic institutions or contribute to the curriculum development.
  4. Graduates can also explore other avenues such as advanced/higher studies like MD or MS in Ayurveda, Master’s in Public Health, or MBA in Healthcare.
  5. They can also work as pharmacists -manufacturing and marketing Ayurvedic medicines, contribute to the public health, and/or drug production.
  6. Starting a private practice or launching their own wellness brand is an increasingly popular career path.
  7. It is seen that international opportunities, especially in the Middle East and a few Western countries, are growing and can be highly rewarding.

Entry-level salaries typically range from Rs. 3,00,000 to Rs. 6,00,000 per year, depending on the expertise and location. With experience, BAMS doctors can earn between Rs. 10,00,000 to Rs. 15,00,000 per annum.

Conclusion

BAMS is a promising career choice, combining ancient healing wisdom with modern medical knowledge. As wellness and preventive healthcare gain global recognition, BAMS graduates can confidently lead the future of healthcare in India and beyond.
