Mass communication encompasses transmitting messages across media, including television, radio, newspapers, and now new-age media (digital platforms). The concept of mass media emerged as a means to share messages and news with larger audience groups, spread across wide geographies and demographics. It soon transformed into a promising medium to publish news, collect and collate public opinion, and study societal trends.
The recent years have seen a drastic surge in the ways and means people access and consume content. There has been rapid digitisation, a social media revolution, and the growth of OTT platforms, which has in turn enhanced the need for content creation professionals, public relations and corporate communication professionals, and regional journalists and media professionals.
A Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication is a 3-year undergraduate course that focuses on areas such as communication fundamentals, media production, journalism, advertising, public relations, theories of mass media, understanding the social and political structure in India, media laws, various theories on communication, etc. Students are also trained for practical applications through workshops, mentor-driven media projects, and mandated internship programs.
