The government sector also hires B.Com graduates for various roles. The sector offers high stability, job security, perks and benefits, and a competitive pay scale.


In this blog, we explore some of the top government jobs for B.Com graduates. But before applying, students should clear specific exams. 


Banking Exams, Jobs, and Salary Packages –


1. RBI Grade B Officer exam for roles in finance and economic policy creation. Graduates after selection are paid between Rs. 8 lakhs and Rs. 14 lakhs per annum. Along with graduation, a minimum aggregate of 60% is expected for applying to this role, and candidates in the age group 21 – 30 years are preferred.


2. SBI (State Bank of India) exam for clerks and probationary officers (PO) in the largest public sector bank in India. Clerks in the age group 21 – 28 are preferred, and can earn up to Rs. 35,000 a month, and POs, preferably in the age group 20 – 30, can earn up to Rs. 82,000/month.


3.  IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) exam for POs and clerks in public sector banks, such as Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank. Candidates in the age group 20 – 30 are preferred. POs can expect a salary of Rs. 65,000 – Rs. 72,000/month, and clerks can expect around Rs. 42,000/month.


4. IBPS Specialist Officer (SO) exam – This is a national-level recruitment exam conducted by IBPS.  Candidates between 20 – 30 years are preferred and this is ideal for roles in IT, HR, marketing, agriculture, and law. Officers can earn up to Rs. 60,000/month.


5. NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) Grade A/B exam – The focus here is on agriculture and rural development, and the monthly gross salary is around Rs. 1 lakh.


Insurance and Regulatory Exams, Jobs, and Salary Packages


1. SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) Grade A Officer exam. This post focuses on market regulation and is a high-paying job where an officer can earn a salary of up to Rs. 1,84,000/month.


2. LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) Assistant Administrative Officer (AAO) – The class 1 role is a prestigious position with a salary of around Rs. 1.26 lakhs per month in ‘A’ class cities in India. Graduates in the age group 21 – 30 are eligible to apply. Specialised roles demand specific degrees, such as CA, law, IT, etc.  


Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Exam and Salary Package


SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level) examThis is a national-level recruitment exam for Groups B & C in the central government. Graduates in the age group 18-30/32 (for specific roles) are eligible to apply. The salary range is between Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 80,000/month. The selected candidates can work as income tax inspector/tax assistant, assistant audit officer, sub-inspector in CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) or NIA (National Investigation), and central excise inspector in manufacturing or trade sectors.


Administrative and Specialised Exams, Jobs, and Salary Packages


UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services examination is for prestigious top government positions such as IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IFS (Indian Foreign Service/Indian Forest Service), IPS (Indian Police Service), IRS (Indian Revenue Service), etc. These are roles with authority and high responsibility. They are involved in policy formulation, public administration, handling law and order, and field management. Graduates in the age group 21-32 are eligible to apply, with generally an option to clear the exam in 6 attempts for general category candidates. The gross pay is between Rs. 70k and Rs. 1 lakh a month with perks and other facilities. The role of cabinet secretary is the highest post after clearing the UPSC exam, and based on the seniority, candidates can earn up to Rs. 2,50,000/month.  


PSC (Public Service Commission) exams are conducted for roles in state government departments. For example, Karnataka conducts KPSC exam for graduates. The gross monthly salary for the selected candidate is between Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 1,15,000 per month.


FDA (First Division Assistant) exam is conducted for clerical and administrative roles within the state government. The approximate in-hand salary is between Rs. 48,000 and Rs. 58,000 per month along with annual increments and promotions.


Railways and Defense Exams, Jobs, and Salary Packages


RRB NTPC (Railway Recruitment Board – Non-Technical Popular Category) exam for graduates requires candidates in the age group 18-33 years and are offered roles in zonal railways and production units. The salary package is between Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 55,000/month.


UPSC CDS/AFCAT (Combined Defense Services/Air Force Common Admission Test) is a national-level premier exam for technical and non-technical roles in the Indian armed forces. While CDS focuses on the army, navy, and air force, AFCAT is specific to the air force. For roles in accounts and administrative roles such as the ground staff, B.Com graduates in the age group 19-24/25 with a minimum aggregate of 60% are eligible to apply. The salary package with allowances can go up to Rs. 90,000/month.


Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) Jobs

Roles such as accounts assistant, financial analyst, etc. in PSUs like ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Commission), BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), IOCL (Indian Oil Corporation Limited), etc. Entry-level salaries can be between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 35,000 per month and with experience, it can go up to Rs. 50,000 per month.


Conclusion

Commerce graduates have promising career opportunities in the government sector with promotions offered mostly every 2-3 years, and other benefits like pensions, housing, medical facilities, and other allowances.


But graduates need to have a general sense of current affairs, banking and finance terminologies, and latest government policies, along with quantitative aptitude, reasoning, and English comprehension, while taking up the entrance exams for various roles.
