Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospitals (VMKVMCH), Salem, established in 1995 by the visionary philanthropist Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram, stands as one of the premier medical institutions in South India dedicated to excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare delivery. The institution was initially affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and subsequently became a constituent college of Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation (Deemed to be University) in 2004.
The institution functions under the esteemed leadership of Dato' Seri Dr. S. Sharavanan, who serves as the employer and guiding force of Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospitals. The academic and administrative affairs of the institution are overseen by Dr. K. Ezhil Vendhan, whose leadership ensures the effective implementation of educational, clinical, and institutional development initiatives.
Located in a serene rural setting in Salem, Tamil Nadu, the campus spans 69 acres, providing a conducive environment for medical education and healthcare services. VMKVMCH offers the MBBS programme with an annual intake of 150 students and postgraduate MD/MS programmes with 110 seats across 23 well-established departments, all recognized by the National regulatory authorities for medical education.
Healthcare Services
VMKVMCH is committed to its mission of serving humanity through accessible and high-quality healthcare. The attached teaching hospital has 850 beds and provides comprehensive medical services supported by advanced diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. The hospital combines modern medical technology with compassionate patient care, ensuring affordable treatment for the community.
The hospital also supports public health initiatives by offering services under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), thereby extending quality healthcare access to economically disadvantaged populations. Through its patient-centric approach, the institution continues to contribute significantly to regional healthcare delivery.
Accreditation and Quality Assurance
VMKVMCH maintains a strong commitment to quality assurance in academics, healthcare, and research. The institution is accredited with “A” Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) as part of its parent university, Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation (Deemed to be University). The hospital is also accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) and certified under multiple ISO quality standards.
All academic departments are well-equipped with modern laboratories, ICT-enabled infrastructure, and air-conditioned lecture halls with advanced audio-visual teaching systems
that meet and exceed the norms prescribed by the National Medical Commission. The institution also maintains internal and external quality assurance mechanisms to continuously enhance academic standards and institutional performance.
Medical Education and Research
VMKVMCH actively promotes research and academic innovation among faculty and students. The institution provides research incentives, seed funding, and institutional support for projects at both national and international levels under the research policies of Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation (Deemed to be University).
The college publishes “Variyar MedMag”, an institutional magazine showcasing achievements and developments in academic, administrative, and research activities. Faculty development programmes are regularly conducted through the Medical Education and Technology Unit to strengthen teaching competencies in alignment with Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) guidelines of the National Medical Commission.
These initiatives are periodically conducted in collaboration with Christian Medical College, which serves as a recognized Nodal Centre for Medical Education.
Student Enrichment and Community Outreach
VMKVMCH emphasizes the holistic development of students through structured mentoring programmes, professional development initiatives, and a wide range of extracurricular and co-curricular activities. The institution regularly organizes seminars, workshops, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes to foster lifelong learning among students and faculty.
Community engagement remains a cornerstone of the institution’s mission. Through medical camps, National Service Scheme (NSS) activities, and rural health outreach programmes, the college provides healthcare services to rural, tribal, and underserved populations in and around Salem and neighbouring districts. Postgraduate residents also undergo advanced clinical training through the District Residency Programme (DRP) in Government Headquarters Hospitals as mandated by the National Medical Commission, enabling them to gain hands-on experience in diverse healthcare settings.
The institution places strong emphasis on student well-being and holistic development. To promote physical fitness, recreation, and work–life balance among students, VMKVMCH has established state-of-the-art sports and wellness facilities, including a well-maintained cricket ground, synthetic volleyball and basketball courts, and a modern gymnasium equipped with essential fitness amenities. These facilities encourage active participation in sports and recreational activities, contributing to the overall physical and mental well-being of students.
