The Bachelor of Commerce is an undergraduate course offered both as a regular, full-time course and remotely, through distance education.
Here are the core differences.
1. Mode of education
A regular course involves regular, in-person classes with a fixed timetable. A minimum attendance requirement (generally 75%, though it may vary by institution) is integral to this mode.
Distance education doesn’t follow the method of regular, in-person classes. Students do self-paced study but might have to attend limited-contact classes if the institution mandates them.
2. Duration
A regular course is for 3 years (full-time program).
Distance education allows students to complete the course in 3 to 6 years, as it is mainly self-paced.
3. Fees
For a regular course, government colleges charge between Rs. 5k and Rs. 40k per year. Private colleges charge between Rs. 60k and Rs. 1.5 lakhs per year. Autonomous/deemed universities can charge up to Rs. 2.5 lakhs per year.
For distance education, the fee at government colleges is extremely affordable, ranging from Rs. 5k to Rs. 30k for the complete course. Private colleges can go up to Rs. 1 lakh (for the complete course).
The difference in cost between the two modes is mainly due to infrastructure costs, such as the campus and hostel.
4. Exposure
Regular course provides higher exposure to mentors, peer interaction, workshops and seminars, industrial visits, direct contact with faculty/professors, group projects, fests, presentations, guest lectures, campus life, internship and networking opportunities.
For instance, when the batch mates become CAs, bankers, CS, etc., later, the contacts can be handy. Students can also clear their doubts immediately with faculty through direct interaction.
Distance education doesn’t provide much, if any, such exposure. It also has fewer internships and campus placement opportunities.
5. Flexibility
As a regular course is a full-time program, it doesn’t provide the flexibility to work while studying or the time to prepare for competitive or other exams.
Distance education allows students to work while studying, prepare for other exams (as it is self-paced), and gain work experience while studying. For example, if a person is preparing for his CA/CMA course, a regular course is not suitable, as it requires considerable time for coaching and preparation.
A regular course requires regular attendance at college, and if a student doesn’t find their preferred college in their city or is unable to relocate, distance education from a UGC-DEB (University Grants Commission-Distance Education Bureau) college in a different city is a better option.
7. Recognition
A regular course is accepted everywhere, but a course through distance education should be recognised by UGC-DEB for post-graduate studies and job applications.
8. Skill development
There is direct exposure to academic and co-curricular activities and direct interaction with peers, seniors, and faculty. This is a great way to build soft skills, which can help a great deal in the future.
As students go solo in distance learning, they might not have the opportunity to develop such skills while studying.
9. Career path
Regular B.Com has better placement opportunities. Top companies such as Deloitte, KPMG, and EY hire students directly through campus drives at prestigious institutions.
Distance education lacks this feature. But with strong percentages, internships, and skill development, graduates can still apply to top companies and be selected on merit.
Both modes are academically the same. Earlier, employers preferred a regular course; now, distance education is widely accepted and valid.
In essence, both courses carry similar weight in the job market today. But choosing between the two completely depends on the student’s priorities, such as goals, lifestyle, and career plans.
