The tourism sector in India is one of the fastest-growing fields globally. The travel and tourism sector contributed Rs. 23 trillion to India’s economy in 2025, and the sector supported 46.2 million jobs in 2025 in India.
Courses in tourism management in India
Various course formats are available in this stream –
1. Undergraduate degree –
· Bachelor of Tourism and Travel Management (BTTM) – This provides a comprehensive outlook on ticketing operations, tour packaging, and tour guidance.
· BBA in Travel and Tourism Management - Along with core tourism business principles, the course focuses on the logistics of tourism and marketing.
· Bachelor of Tourism Studies (BTS) – Covers basics of tourism, industry management, designing and planning destinations, hospitality management, tourism marketing, cultural, environmental, and ecological tourism.
· BA in Travel and Tourism – Focuses on tourism principles, tourism geography, tour operations, hospitality, and the basics of tour marketing.
· B.Sc. in Hospitality and Tourism Studies – Covers basics of tourism, touring operations, tourism geography, sustainable tourism, eco-tourism, airlines and ticketing system.
These are some of the 3-4 years’ undergraduate courses available in India. The basic eligibility criteria are to have cleared 10 + 2 from a recognised board with an aggregate of 45%–50% (depending on the institution).
2. Diploma and certificate courses –
The short-term certificate and diploma programs provide fast-track entry into travel, hospitality, and tourism sectors. The course duration is between 6 months and 1 year, and it typically covers tour operations, ticketing systems, itinerary design, hospitality, event management, tourism marketing, and customer service. Students after 12th grade (from any stream) and from a recognised board are eligible to apply.
3. Postgraduate courses –
· Master of Tourism and Travel Management (MTTM) – Equips students with entrepreneurial principles, tour operations, strategic management and marketing, information management systems, tour packaging and planning systems, and sustainable tourism.
· M.Sc. in Tourism and Hospitality Management – Focuses on strategic leadership, managing and strategising visitor experience, corporate strategy, advanced operations, sustainable destination and attraction management, eco-tourism, business innovation, hospitality operations, and global tourism.
· MBA in Travel and Tourism – Core focus is on hospitality, understanding revenue models and accounting of hospitality firms, travel logistics, tour operations, analysing customer travel patterns and market research data, eco-tourism, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) management.
· M.A in Tourism Management – Focuses on advanced business strategies, destination planning and development, sustainable and responsible tourism, hospitality operations, event management, and tech and innovation in tourism.
The typical eligibility criteria include a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with an aggregate of 50%. Some institutions mandate entrance scores from tests such as CAT, MAT, NCHMCET JEE, etc.
Careers
Candidates can find an array of roles across the public and private sectors.
In travel agencies, they can work as tour operators, tour managers, travel consultants, destination managers, etc.
In the aviation sector, they can work as ground staff, cabin crew, customer service representatives, and ticketing executives.
They can work with event management companies as event coordinators, conference organisers, logistics managers, etc.
They can work with hotels and resorts as guest relationship managers, sales and marketing executives, etc.
With online travel agencies as content creators, business analysts, consumer behaviour analysts, product managers, and customer support representatives.
With the government tourism department as tourism officers, marketing executives, or customer support representatives.
