Unani is a traditional system of medicine with its roots in ancient Greece. It came to India around the 8^th century and gradually developed into a comprehensive medical system through the works of scholars. Today, it is recognised under India’s AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) framework and is regulated by the National Commission of Indian System of Medicine (NCISM).

Course details

It is a 5.5-year undergraduate program with 4.5 years of academic study and 1 year of mandatory internship. The course encompasses classroom teaching, lab work, hospital-based clinical training, and internship.

The curriculum combines core Unani principles, i.e., humoral theory, where health depends on the balance of 4 humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Along with this, it also considers the interaction of elements, temperament, organs, vital spirits, faculties, and bodily functions. This traditional medical theory is combined with structured education in anatomy, pathology, physiology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery, and clinical practice. Students also learn about different types of Unani treatments, including exercises, therapies, Turkish baths, etc.

Students after Class 12 (with physics, chemistry, biology, and English) and an aggregate of 50% are eligible to apply after clearing the NEET-UG entrance test. Proficiency in Urdu, Arabic, or Persian is often preferred by certain institutions.

Fee structure

Government colleges charge between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 40,000 per year.

State/central/autonomous universities charge between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 1 lakh per year.

Private colleges charge between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 3 lakhs per year.

Deemed universities charge up to Rs. 4 lakhs per year.

Career scope

Graduates can choose career paths in –

· Government healthcare segment

As Unani medical officers, take up AYUSH/National Health Mission (NHM) roles, or work as ESI medical officers under central government health schemes.   

· Research and pharmaceutical industries

As clinical researchers, drug inspectors, quality control officers, pharmacists and formulation developers in Unani pharmaceutical companies.

· Private/clinical practice/hospitals

As Unani practitioners, regimental therapists, hospital administrators, etc.

· Academia

Pursue post-graduation (MS/MD in Unani) and teach in colleges and universities.

· Global opportunities

Practice in countries that promote Unani medicine and serve as medical tourism hubs, including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Western Countries.

Salary

Unani graduates earn between Rs. 2.5 lakhs and Rs. 6 lakhs per annum as freshers. With experience or government placements or with private practice, the earnings can go over Rs. 15 lakhs per annum.
