Uttarakhand teacher goes beyond 'call of duty' for his students

"These children are my family," Dhoundiyal said. "I knew they would fall through the cracks if I left." A native of Chamoli, he was always concerned about high dropout rates among the region's high school students. "I started by coaching high school students but quickly realised their weak foundation in primary education. That's when I decided to focus on being a primary school teacher," he added.

For nearly two decades, Ghanshyam Dhoundiyal has been teaching alone at the primary school in Chamoli's Syuni Malli village, where he has taught hundreds of students. He passed up two promotions to a lecturer, a chance to start a family and comfortable postings in Dehradun or larger towns.

For 27 years, Dhoundiyal has served as an educator. He specifically requested this remote posting and dedicated himself entirely to it, and his efforts have paid off. "My students are doing exceptionally well in English, a subject that remains a challenge in state schools. Some have secured top positions in state-level competitions for drawing and sports. No one wanted a 'durgam' (remote) posting here, but now we finally have a second teacher," he said.
