“You can’t use up creativity; the more you use it, the more you have." – Maya Angelou, American Memoirist, Essayist, and Poet.

A creative person need not be just an artist; this is someone who constantly comes up with new ideas and gives them wings through art, design, aesthetics, stories, solutions, or even experiences.

Creative courses demand -

a.  A great sense of imagination

b. A mind that notices patterns in unrelated things, such as tech and art, design and psychology, etc.

c. People who do not follow a manual to reach outcomes. They are fine with ambiguity and imperfection as long as it delivers impact and an emotional connection.

d.  The equal usage of both hemispheres of the brain. One that thinks artistically to imagine things and one that thinks analytically to execute it. For instance, a filmmaker needs a budget as much as a concept and vision; a UI/UX designer needs to conduct empathy mapping alongside data collation. Hence, it is often seen that creative courses are not suitable for everyone.

There was a time when creative jobs wouldn’t pay very well. But times have changed, and top UI/UX designers, creative directors, and art directors for commercial and ad films are paid between Rs. 8 lakhs and Rs. 45 lakhs per annum, which is on par with other professions. Let us understand what has led to this shift –

1. From companies to consumers, the ecosystem is moving towards the experience economy. Companies pay people who can create a brand perception through emotions and build trust, and consumers, in turn, buy products that retain their attention and help them connect emotionally.

2. Brands now tie influencer marketing directly to revenue targets. Strategists for brands and creative directors hold a prestigious place in boardrooms today, discussing revenue models and outcomes. The influencer marketing sector in India, which was at Rs. 3,500 crore in 2025, is expected to reach Rs. 5,000 crore by 2027.

3. AI has taken over the repetitive and time-consuming parts of the creative works, such as resizing, adapting to multiple versions, trimming videos, or adjusting layout. So, companies pay for those things that AI still can’t achieve. Creative thinking, deciphering human emotions, storytelling, human connection, solving real business problems, etc. For example, professionals are paid for having a good sense of taste and judgment about consumer behaviour, what makes consumers comfortable, and what makes the User Interface (UI) more friendly, etc.

4. An explosion of OTT, gaming, and ads, allowing for content consumption at every level.

5. Accessibility to remote jobs and freelancing has made creative work more exciting, helping professionals earn in dollars.
