The Bachelor of Science degree in India started as an academically oriented, traditional course but has evolved into an extremely diverse and skill-oriented program with an interdisciplinary approach. With the formation of the National Education Policy (2020), the BSc courses are focused on specialisations, industry-specific and technical training in collaboration with industry partners, which has expanded the scope of the courses beyond academics and research.


Top courses in India

All BSc courses in India span a period of 3-4 years. The course necessitates a PCM, PCB, or PCMB background after completing class 12 from a recognised board.

1. BSc Information Technology (IT) – The course requires a minimum of 50-55% marks with a mathematics background. Admissions are generally based on merit, with some institutions that prefer entrance tests such as CUET and others based on their internal entrance exams.

Students are trained for web development, networks, managing database, and securing digital information. Fees range between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 1.5 lakhs per year, depending on the institution. Graduates can work in system administration jobs in IT companies, including roles such as software developer, IT consultant, database and network administrator, etc.  


 2. BSc Computer Science – While BSc IT focuses on the practical aspects of managing and fixing computer systems, networks, and applications, BSc Computer Science focuses on the theoretical aspects covering data structures, algorithms, and programming languages. PCM is the preferred background, and admissions can be sought after clearing entrance exams such as JEE Main, CUET, or other institution-specific tests. Annual fees in government colleges can go up to Rs. 50,000, and in private colleges – between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 3 lakhs. Graduates can work as software developers, data scientists, network architects, system administrators, etc.


 3. BSc - Biology, Botany, Zoology – BSc Biology is a broader stream that focuses on general life sciences, i.e., all living organisms. The focus is on subjects such as molecular biology, genetics, and ecology. Students with a minimum of 45-50% marks with a PCB background in 12th grade are eligible to apply. Graduates can work as geneticists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, research analysts, etc.

BSc Botany focuses on plant life that includes plant biology, plant pathology, taxonomy, plant anatomy and physiology, horticulture, and related subjects. Graduates can work as botanists, plant pathologists, horticulturists, ecologists, conservationists, and agricultural scientists.  

BSc Zoology offers specialised studies on animal life with a focus on animal anatomy, animal biology, animal behaviour, diversity, physiology, genetics, and evolution. Graduates can work as zoologists, animal scientists, behavioural scientists, wildlife biologists, zoo or wildlife curators, and research assistants.

Fees range in government colleges for these courses – up to Rs. 10,000 per year, and in private colleges – Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 1.5 lakhs per year or even more. Admission is merit-based but some colleges prefer exams such as CUET or internal tests. 


 4. BSc – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics – BSc Physics focuses on natural laws and mechanics, covering subjects such as matter, energy, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, semiconductors, etc. Graduates can work in sectors such as aeronautics, research, academia, automobiles, etc.

BSc Chemistry is another undergraduate program that focuses on fundamental sciences. It covers topics such as compounds, atomic structure, composition, and chemical properties of substances, and includes advanced topics such as organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. Graduates can work in various sectors, including research, pharmaceuticals, academia, chemical firms, and many more.

BSc Mathematics is designed for enthusiasts in subjects such as pure and applied mathematics. Along with the core mathematical concepts, students also get to learn logical and analytical problem-solving skills. Graduates can work in the academic sector, research, banks, accounts departments of several public and private organisations, etc.  

The courses require an aggregate of 35-50% in PCM, and admission is based on merit and entrance tests such as JEE Main, CUET, MHT CET, and institution-level exams. Fees range in government colleges between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 30,000 per year. In private colleges – Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 1.5 lakhs per year or more, depending on the institution.

6. BSc Microbiology – This domain helps students specialise in the scientific study of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Along with theoretical knowledge, students are trained in the labs to understand the influence of microorganisms on the life of human beings and our environment.

Students with a minimum of 50-55% in PCB and after clearing entrance tests such as CUET or other institution-based exams are eligible to apply. Fees in government colleges can go up to Rs. 50,000 (total course fees), and private colleges charge between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 4 lakhs (for the complete course). Graduates can work in industries including healthcare, pharmaceuticals,

R & D, diagnostic labs, environmental organisations, food and beverage, etc.

 
7. BSc Biotechnology – This is essentially a 3-year course, but as per NEP (National Education Policy), it can go up to 4 years. It is the stream that combines biological systems and technology for developing products and solutions in healthcare, agriculture, and other industries. A minimum of 50-60% marks is expected in PCM or PCMB subjects. Admission is based on scores from 12th grade, but institutions can also conduct exams such as CUET, KCET, or other internal entrance exams. Government colleges offer the course between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 60,000 annually. Affordable private institutions can charge between Rs. 2 lakhs and Rs. 5 lakhs annually, which can go up to Rs. 13 lakhs in top-rated institutions.

Graduates can work as research associates or scientists, quality assurance experts, biotech specialists, bioinformatics analysts, etc.

11. BSc Nutrition and Dietetics – The 3-year course focuses on food science, nutrition science, food product development, human health, physiology, and diet. Students with a minimum of 50% marks in PCB after completing entrance exams such as CUET, and/or other institution-specific tests can apply. However, generally colleges consider the admissions based on merit.

 

Government colleges can charge up to Rs. 50,000 annually, whereas private colleges charge between Rs. 2 lakhs and Rs. 6 lakhs per annum. Graduates can work as clinical nutritionists or dieticians, food service managers, or in sectors such as research, healthcare, and sports.

 

12. BSc Nursing – This is a 4-year program that requires a minimum of 50% aggregate in PCB. Colleges generally prefer English proficiency as an eligibility criterion for admissions. Admission is based on entrance exams such as NEET, AIIMS nursing exam, CUET, and other state-level entrance exams. The course covers topics such as human anatomy, microbiology, physiology, fundamentals of nursing, pediatrics, psychology, etc.

Government colleges charge between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 50,000 per year, and private colleges charge between Rs. 90,000 and Rs. 3.5 lakhs per year. Graduates can work in hospitals, in community health centres, as nurse researchers, etc.

 

13. BSc Forensic Science – Forensic science is an interesting field of study that applies scientific methods and techniques to criminal investigation. Core subjects include forensic - chemistry, biology, anthropology, ballistics, toxicology, criminal law, and related topics. Along with the theoretical knowledge, students are trained in analytical and critical thinking, giving attention to detail, and observation skills. Students from PCB/PCMB background with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible to apply. Admissions are merit-based or through entrance exams such as AISFET, LPUNEST, and/or other institution-specific tests.

Graduates can work with government crime investigation bodies, forensic science laboratories, law firms, and with private detective agencies.  

 

14. BSc Psychology – This is a 3-4-year undergraduate program and covers topics such as clinical psychology, human behaviour, cognitive and social psychology, developmental psychology, and research methodology. If it is a 4-year course, then the final year is generally for the honours program that includes research and submissions. Students from PCB/PCMB background with a minimum of 50% marks are eligible to apply. 

Government colleges charge between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 60,000 annually; private colleges charge between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 3 lakhs annually, depending on the institution. Distance education or remote learning can cost between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 30,000 per annum.

Graduates can work as counsellors, in the departments of HR, rehabilitation, forensics, research, and associate with social work groups.
