In this blog, we explore the top entrance exams for commerce students (B.Com and beyond) after class 12 to get into top-tier colleges or associated commerce courses.
Finance, Management, and Business-Driven Courses
1. CUET (UG) – Common University Entrance Test
This national-level entrance test is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to top universities such as Delhi University (DU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), etc. This entrance exam is now mandatory for most government colleges. The minimum aggregate varies by university and the program.
2. IPMAT – Integrated Program in Management Aptitude Test
A national-level entrance exam conducted by IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, and IIM Ranchi for their 5-year integrated program in management. Students after class 12 (after they clear the entrance exam) can combine a bachelor’s degree along with an MBA from the prestigious institutions, including IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Shillong, etc.
3. NMIMS NPAT – Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies - National Test for Programs After Twelfth
This is an entrance exam conducted by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (SVKM’s NMIMS) for B.Com, BBA, B.Sc, and other UG courses across their campuses in Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad.
4. CUET – Christ University Entrance Test
Christ University has campuses in Bangalore, Delhi, and Pune. The CUET exam is conducted by the university for various undergraduate courses, including B.Com.
5. SET - Symbiosis Entrance Test
This is a mandatory computer-based entrance test conducted by Symbiosis International for their colleges in Pune, Noida, Nagpur, Nashik, Indore, Hyderabad, and Bangalore.
6. IPU CET – Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Common Entrance Test
This is a university-level entrance exam conducted for admission to its affiliate colleges.
7. AIMA UGAT – All India Management Association – Undergraduate Aptitude Test
This is a national-level entrance exam conducted every year by AIMA for various undergraduate courses among participating institutions.
8. LPUNEST – Lovely Professional University National Entrance and Scholarship Test
This is both an entrance and scholarship (online) test for admission to B.Com and other undergraduate programs. Students with a minimum aggregate of 60% in class 12 are eligible to apply.
9. XET - Xavier’s Entrance Test
For admission to the Xavier group of institutions for courses like B.Com in Management Studies (BMS) for their campuses in Mumbai, Goa, etc.
10. JIPMAT – Joint Integrated Programme in Management Admission Test
This is a national-level exam conducted by NTA for 5-year integrated management programs at IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya.
Law Courses
1. CLAT – Common Law Admission Test
For those who wish to study law alongside commerce and finance, the CLAT exam allows admission to 5-year integrated law programs at National Law Universities.
2. AILET – All India Law Entrance Test
This is a national-level exam conducted by National Law University, Delhi (NLUD), for admission to BA LLB, LLM, and PhD programs.
3. MHCET Law – Maharashtra Common Entrance Test Law
This is a state-level entrance exam conducted by the State CET Cell, Maharashtra, for admission to 3-year and 5-year integrated LLB programs for colleges across Maharashtra.
Accounting and Finance Courses
1. CA (Chartered Accountant) Foundation Exam
This is a foundation exam conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). This acts as a stepping stone for a robust career in finance, accounting, taxation, and auditing. Commerce students after class 12, with an aggregate of 50% are eligible to apply for this exam.
2. CMA (Cost Management Accountant) Foundation Exam
This is a certificate program conducted by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). This is an important exam for those interested in cost accounting and financial management roles. Commerce students after class 12, with a minimum aggregate of 50% are eligible to apply.
3. CSSET (Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test)
This is conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). The course prepares students to advise organisations on financial matters, legal and governance issues. Class 12 students with a commerce background from an accredited board or university are eligible to apply.
For students interested in Economics, Statistics, and Math-Driven Courses -
ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) Admission Test is a national-level entrance exam for admission to courses such as B.Stat and B.Math. This is a tough entrance test conducted for ISI Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, etc.
B.Com in applied economics/statistics is a 3-year undergraduate course which requires a minimum aggregate of 50%. Universities like Christ offer specialised programs like B.Com in applied finance/analytics.
BBE (Bachelor of Business Economics) is also a 3-year undergraduate course for commerce students. BA Economics (Hons) and BBA are some of the similar courses students can explore for analytical roles.
For those interested in Hotel Management -
BHM (Bachelor of Hotel Management) – A 3-4-year degree course that focuses on hospitality and hotel operations.
BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) in Hospitality/Hotel Management – A 3-year degree program focusing on the business aspects of the hospitality sector.
Apart from these, there are several state-level entrance exams conducted by specific states for state-run universities and colleges -
Such as UPSEE/UPCET (for Uttar Pradesh), MAH-CET (for Maharashtra), WB CAP (for West Bengal), TS DOST/AP OAMDC (for Telangana/Andhra Pradesh), etc.
