After the completion of class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB), students oriented towards healthcare have numerous opportunities in India. The course options can be divided into those requiring NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) scores and those not dependent on NEET.

Top courses (requiring NEET)


1. Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) – This is the primary qualification recognised globally for practicing medical doctors. It is a 5-year and 6 months’ undergraduate degree with 4.5 years of academic learning and 1 year of mandatory internship. Students after grade 12, with a minimum aggregate of 50%, are eligible to apply based on NEET scores. Graduates can work as general doctors/practitioners, medical officers in government services or armed forces, start private practices, get into teaching or research fields, work in the forensic department, or work in the field of medical journalism. Once they complete their MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery), they can work as specialised consultants. Entry-level salary is between Rs. 4 lakhs and Rs. 8 lakhs per annum; mid-level salary is between Rs. 8 lakhs and 15 lakhs per annum; specialists earn between Rs. 15 lakhs and Rs. 70 lakhs per annum; and top specialists can earn around 1 crore annually. Private hospitals and metropolitan cities offer higher salaries.

Students with a Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) background after class 12, with an aggregate of 50%, are eligible to apply. Graduates can find extensive opportunities in hospitals and clinics, healthcare centres, diagnostic centres, research laboratories, and pharmaceutical companies. Salary can vary based on the city, experience, skills, and the employer. Freshers can earn up to Rs. 25,000 a month. With experience of 3-5 years, the salary can go up to Rs. 50,000/month. For senior-level positions or with 8+ years of experience, professionals can earn between Rs. 8 lakhs and Rs. 15 lakhs per annum.

4. B.Sc. Nursing - This is a 4-year program that requires a minimum of 50% aggregate in PCB. Colleges generally prefer English proficiency as an eligibility criterion for admissions. The course covers topics such as human anatomy, microbiology, physiology, fundamentals of nursing, pediatrics, psychology, etc. Graduates can work in hospitals, community health centres, and as nurse researchers. Entry-level salary is between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 30,000 per month. Salaries increase with experience, and private hospitals offer up to Rs. 80,000 per month based on skills and specialisation.

5. B.Sc. in Radiology and Imaging Technology – This is a 3-year undergraduate program. Students after class 12 with a Physics, Chemistry, Biology background with an aggregate of 50% are eligible to apply. Students specialise in diagnostic imaging techniques and can work in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and diagnostic centres. Entry-level salary is between Rs. 2.5 lakhs and Rs. 4 lakhs per annum, which can go up to Rs. 8 lakhs with experience. Senior-level positions can earn between Rs. 6 lakhs and over RS. 12 lakhs per annum. 

It is important to note that after a B.Sc in Radiology and Imaging Technology, graduates can work as technologists or technicians, not as doctors. A radiologist is a doctor who has completed an MBBS with a specialisation in radio-diagnosis.

6. Bachelor of Occupational Therapy – This is a 4-year and 6-month program (4 years of academic learning and 6 months’ internship) that trains students in rehabilitation. This covers the rehabilitation for both physical and mental disabilities. Students with a PCB background after class 12, with a minimum aggregate of 50%, are eligible to apply. These can be pursued as a bachelor’s degree or diploma, or a certification course.
